But first, let’s learn a little bit more about pastel colors. Pastels are soft colors that can be used for all kinds of designs. They’re not just for easter and babies. In fact, one of the easiest ways to use a pastel color is as a background color in your digital or print design project. Let’s examine pastels a little more in-depth so we can understand them from a technical standpoint.

Terminology

Hue

Hue is another word for color. When it comes to pastels, you could say, cotton candy’s color, or hue, is pink.

Value

Value measures a color’s lightness or darkness. Light colors have a high value, and dark colors have a low value. Therefore, white has the highest value of any hue, and black is at the opposite end. Since pastels are created by adding white to any hue, their value tends to be high.

Intensity

Intensity describes how much pigment is in a color. If there is a lot of pigment in a color, then it’s more intense. Pastel colors, on the other hand, tend to be less intense than most other hues.

Tint

Tints are colors that are created by adding white. Pastel colors are considered tints. With enough white, you can basically turn any hue into a pastel.
